ABC Fire Kites

January 22, 2020

Today we received a message from the ABC Australia seeking permission to use our Firekites footage which I shot amongst a grass fire just on the Broome side of the Willare Crossing near Derby, Western Australia. You can view that film footage I shot at https://youtu.be/RK1XfBDBuAM

Posted on the 23rd June 2018, as of 22nd January 2020 the short film has 173, 892 views.

At the time I was shooting with fire lapping at my feet and with the wind ready to switch at any time I was careful to have a clear path back to the road I came off. All told, not such a good thing to be shooting so close to a fire front but one certainly worth its weight in natural wonder gold.

Now for the down side to the story which in many ways has an upside too if it brings about the awareness of the situation of ecological disaster in Australia and for those who do not understand attribution, then the use of our material without it is actually stealing and appropriating our work.

The film they have ‘stolen’ and used without our permission starts at 1:26 and ends at 1:46. Hopefully we will see some rectification in the attributions or at the very least an update in their video description and channel acknowledging the source of the main content - our own creative endeavours.

Note - We consider that this assertion in the context of the Australian fires, particularly in the far southern regions of NSW and Victoria are an extrapolation of fact and unlikely correlation.
